Kaelyn was my very first senior gallery.
It took me longer than I expected to finish editing. I hadn't done a professional gallery before — hadn't gone through that whole process of culling, editing, delivering — and I wanted to get it right. She deserved that.
When I finally delivered it, I was nervous. Genuinely nervous. What if she didn't like it? What if the vibe I had created wasn't what they were hoping for?
Then her mom texted me. They really liked the photos. Said I did a pretty good job.
I sat with that for a minute. It was sixty minutes of shooting and a lot of hours editing after. But thinking back to actually being out there with Kaelyn — picking up my camera, watching her relax into herself by the end — it was just really fun. Like fun in a way I hadn't felt in a long time.
That's what made me realize I actually wanted to build this business.
What I Learned Showing Up for My First Senior Client
Kaelyn was a senior at the Math and Science Academy in Woodbury, MN. Smart, a little shy, and trusting me completely — which honestly made the stakes feel even higher.
The morning of the session I made a decision: whatever I was feeling on the inside, Kaelyn wasn't going to see it. She needed to trust me. And trust doesn't come from a photographer who shows up visibly nervous and second-guessing every shot.
So I acted like I knew exactly what I was doing.
I directed her with purpose. Clear, calm guidance on where to stand, how to hold herself, where to look. And somewhere in that process something interesting happened. The confidence I was performing started to feel real. Because Kaelyn was responding to it. She was relaxing. She was trusting me. And that trust gave me something to rise into.
That's the thing nobody tells you about senior portrait photography. Half the job is making your subject feel safe enough to forget you're there.
A Senior Portrait Session at Lake Elmo, MN
We shot at Lake Elmo — open grassy fields, soft natural light, the kind of setting that does a lot of the work for you if you let it. Lake Elmo is one of my favorite spots for East Metro seniors — it's close to Woodbury, feels spacious and unhurried, and the natural light there is consistently beautiful.
Kaelyn showed up nervous. Which made complete sense — senior portraits feel like a big deal because they are. But as the session went on something shifted. The stiffness faded. She stopped thinking about the camera and settled into herself.
She was wearing a denim jacket over a dress with a red scarf that caught the light beautifully against the green field. When she sat down on a red blanket and just existed for a moment — that was the shot. The one I knew I'd keep coming back to.
The Moment I Knew I Could Do This
Delivering that gallery was one of the most nerve-wracking moments I've had as a photographer. I genuinely didn't know what they'd think.
When Kaelyn and her mom told me the photos looked great — that they appreciated everything — I felt something release that I hadn't realized I'd been holding. Relief, yes. But also something quieter. A sense that maybe I actually belonged here.

Three Things Every Senior Portrait Session Has Taught Me
Confidence is a choice before it's a feeling. Your clients take their cues from you. Show up certain and they'll relax into that certainty.
The pose is just the beginning. I'd give Kaelyn direction and then I'd wait. The real shot always came a few seconds after — when she exhaled, shifted, forgot what her hands were doing.
Trust goes both ways. Kaelyn trusted me with something that mattered to her family. That responsibility made me better.
